Check the listing for four things before you pay

  • The ISBN is 9781595620156, or 159562015X in the older ten-digit form.
  • The listing says "new" or "with sealed access", never "like new" or "very good."
  • The seller is a major retailer, a bulk bookseller or your campus store.
  • The return window is long enough to open the packet and redeem the code.

The International ISBN Agency explains that each format of a title gets its own number, which is why an ebook of the same text carries a different one. If one listing costs a third of what everyone else charges, it is a used copy, whatever the photo shows. If a seller will not confirm in writing that the flap on the inside back cover is still sealed, take that as your answer and buy elsewhere. Our page on the StrengthsFinder 2.0 ISBN goes deeper on matching editions.

If the bookstore is sold out before class

Campus stores sell out at the start of term, and marketplace listings thin out at the same time. If class is less than two weeks away, do not wait for a restock. Buy the Top 5 code from Gallup, take the test, and bring your results. If you want the chapters too, pick up a used copy later, when a spent code no longer matters. If the syllabus insists on the physical book, tell the instructor what happened; a stockout is a problem they will have seen before.

Methodology

What Comes in the StrengthsFinder 2.0 With Access Packet

The access packet is a sealed card glued inside the back cover of Tom Rath's hardcover, which Gallup Press first printed in 2007. Booksellers list it by ISBN 9781595620156, and campus stores often print "with sealed access" on the shelf tag. Same book, same card. It lists at $49.99, and most sellers discount it.

The card is the part your instructor cares about. BookPal's listing for the hardcover spells out what a new copy gets you:

  • One access code to the CliftonStrengths assessment
  • A Top 5 report ranking your five strongest themes
  • A personalized Strengths Discovery and Action-Planning Guide
  • 50 Ideas for Action, ten for each of your five themes
  • The printed book, describing all 34 themes

So a StrengthsFinder book with access code is one test for one person, plus a reference anyone in the house can read.

How Do I Find My Unique Access Code to StrengthsFinder 2.0

Turn to the inside back cover. A new copy has a sealed flap or envelope there, with the code printed on the inside. Gallup's help center says its codes run 10 to 16 characters, digits mixed in with letters. If the flap is torn, or the code has been scratched or written over, treat the copy as used, whatever the listing promised. Photograph the code before you type it. A photo is easier to read than a crumpled card and gives you something to show support if it fails.

The packet scores your Top 5, and seeing all 34 costs extra

The code in the book returns your five highest themes, ranked. The test ranks all 34 from your answers, but you only see the rest if you pay for them. At our September 26, 2026 check, Gallup priced CliftonStrengths 34 at $59.99 on its own, and moving up to all 34 afterward at $49.99, which fills in the rest of your list using your original answers. For a class, the Top 5 is almost always what the syllabus asks for, because it is what the book gives every student. Upgrade later if five leaves you curious about the other 29.

The Difference Between StrengthsFinder and CliftonStrengths Is the Name

Gallup now calls the test CliftonStrengths. The book still carries its 2007 title, so an older syllabus says StrengthsFinder and a newer one says CliftonStrengths. Gallup's own page on StrengthsFinder says the StrengthsFinder assessment it sells is the one that appears in StrengthsFinder 2.0, and it names that book on its list of titles whose codes can be redeemed. If an instructor asks for CliftonStrengths results, the code in this book is how you get them.

What You Get

Redeem the Access Code the Week It Arrives, Then Save Your Top 5

Redeeming the code is quick. What makes it unforgiving is that you get one attempt, and problems tend to show up the night before class. Redeem early, while a bad code is still a return and not an emergency.

Type the code first, then pick the email your results will live under

Open the code page on Gallup's site, type the code in exactly as printed, then continue. Gallup then asks you to sign in to an existing Gallup account or open a new one, and the questions start from there. The account matters more than it looks. Your results live in it, not in the book, so use a personal email rather than a school address that stops working when you graduate. Walden University's library tells its students something similar: the codes are one-time use, so hold on to your results in case a later course asks for them.

Give the CliftonStrengths questions 30 quiet minutes, in one sitting

Gallup puts the test at 30 minutes, all of it paired statements. Budget a little more so you are not watching the clock, and do it at a desk rather than on a bus between lectures. Your first reaction to each pair is what the test is after, so there is nothing to study. Finish in one go if you can, so the answers at the end come from the same mood as the answers at the start.

A dead StrengthsFinder code from a new copy goes back with the receipt

Start by checking that it was not you. If you, or an employer, ever set up CliftonStrengths under the same email, signing in may simply show your old results, and our walkthrough on getting back into a Gallup StrengthsFinder account shows where they sit. If the book was new and the code still fails, Gallup's help center asks for a copy of your receipt, and says it may be able to replace the code once it has checked the purchase. That is why you keep the receipt until the test is done. If the book was used, nothing can be done. The code belonged to whoever opened the packet first, and the fastest fix is buying a Top 5 on Gallup's own store.

StrengthsFinder access codes work once, and use is what ends them

Each code opens the test a single time, for a single person. It cannot be shared, split, or reused. Once it is redeemed, it belongs to one account for good. Gallup recommends using a book code within about a year of buying it, so a copy that has sat on a shelf for longer is a risk. The clock that bites first, though, is the seller's return window. Open the packet and redeem inside it, and a dead code turns into money back. If a second sitting is ever needed, that means a second code, and our note on a second sitting of StrengthsFinder covers the cost.

Your Top 5 results: five themes, ranked one to five

When you finish, the results page shows five talent themes ranked one to five, drawn from the 34 that Gallup uses. Achiever, Learner, Empathy and Strategic are a few of the names. Under each theme sits a short description written about you, and the action-planning guide adds ten ideas per theme. That is what most classes and workshops want you to bring: five names, and a sentence or two on where you see each one in your own life.

Be clear on what kind of result this is. The test shows you two descriptions at a time, you mark which one is closer to you, and the themes are ranked from those choices. So the Top 5 is your own account of your working habits, sorted into a shared vocabulary. That makes it good for a seminar or a team offsite, where everyone can say "I lead with Learner" and be understood. It does not test what you can do, and Gallup makes no claim that it picks jobs.

Save the StrengthsFinder report before the session, not during it

Sign in to your Gallup account the day you finish, save the Top 5 report, and email a copy to yourself. Classroom Wi-Fi and a forgotten password are easy ways to show up to a strengths session empty-handed. If a facilitator asks you to share results ahead of time, send the report itself rather than a list typed from memory, because the descriptions under each theme are what people discuss.

The Difference

Where the StrengthsFinder 2.0 Access Packet Stops and Pigment Picks Up

A Top 5 is a good fit for a class or a team session. Here are four things it was not designed to settle, and what Pigment adds for each.

StrengthsFinder talent themes vs what sustains you at work

Your Top 5 names talents you use without effort. Two people who both lead with Achiever can still need very different jobs: one does well on a fast stream of small wins, the other on one hard project a quarter. Pigment measures that second layer: the pace, the amount of company and the kind of pressure you can take year after year. It weighs your strengths too.

StrengthsFinder Top 5 report vs a Career Alignment section

The Top 5 report is written to help you use your talents wherever you already are. Pigment's 36-page report is built for the step from classroom to first real job: How Your Mind Works shows how you take in information and make calls, and What You Would Be Good At turns that into directions worth trying before you apply anywhere.

StrengthsFinder 2.0 with access packet vs a test you take for a career decision

A book code is usually bought because a teacher or a manager assigned it, and the result is used in that room. Pigment is a test people tend to seek out on their own, when an offer, a stalled role or a restructure has them weighing what to do next. Its questions are about work, and its report is written for that choice.

StrengthsFinder theme names vs Rare Traits

CliftonStrengths scores every taker on one shared list of 34 themes, so your five are names thousands of classmates share. Pigment's report ends with a Rare Traits section, which marks where you stand out. It finds that by counting how often each combination of traits turns up among Pigment's past test takers, and flagging the ones that seldom appear together.
Side by Side

The StrengthsFinder 2.0 Book and Code Beside Pigment

Dimension Pigment Typical tests
What you buy A hardcover book with one sealed code inside
Price $49.99 list, usually discounted
Who it suits best Students and teams who were assigned it
Question format Paired statements, about 30 minutes
What it names Your Top 5 of 34 talent themes
Career direction Not designed to point you at jobs
Where your results live In your Gallup account

These two answer different questions. StrengthsFinder gives a class or a team a shared set of words for talent, and it does that well for the price of a book. Pigment costs more and asks something narrower: which day-to-day setup you do your best work in, from how fast the work moves to how many people are around you to how much pressure sits on each call. Use the book for the assignment. Use Pigment when you are choosing a job.

Who It's For

Who Buys StrengthsFinder 2.0 With an Access Packet: Classes, Teams, and Readers

Three kinds of buyer end up on this listing. Students whose syllabus names the book, often in a first-year seminar or a leadership course. Employees whose manager or HR team is running a strengths workshop. And readers who want the book for itself and are curious about their own five.

If you need StrengthsFinder 2.0 for class, read the syllabus wording before you buy anything. If it only says "bring your Top 5," the book is optional and a code from Gallup's store is enough. If it assigns chapters, you need the book, and a new copy covers both. Then ask the instructor or the career office whether codes are provided, because some schools and employers buy codes by the box and give them out. Our page on CliftonStrengths for students picks up once you have the results.

Does the Library Have the StrengthsFinder 2.0 Book and Assessment?

Often the book, almost never the assessment. A library copy has usually been opened by an earlier borrower, and libraries catalog the book, not the card inside it. Walden University's library puts it plainly: the book is used as a textbook, the library does not stock textbooks, and students should buy the book and assessment themselves. Borrowing makes sense if the reading is all you need, and WorldCat shows which libraries near you hold a copy. It will not get you a Top 5.

Teams need one book per person, ordered weeks ahead

Twelve people in a workshop means twelve codes, since a code opens one account only. BookPal lists bulk pricing that starts at 42 percent off for one to four copies and grows with the order, and it estimates 7 to 10 business days for delivery, with extra processing time possible. That is two weeks gone before anyone answers a question. Order a month out, and ask everyone to redeem at least a week before the session so the facilitator has time to chase a dead code. Our page on StrengthsFinder for teams covers running the session itself.

When to skip the book and buy a StrengthsFinder code alone

If you took CliftonStrengths before, at school or at work, you do not need a new code. Sign in to that old account and your Top 5 will be waiting. If you only need the result, the Top 5 alone runs $24.99 at Gallup's store (our September 26, 2026 check), which is less than most new copies and arrives by email. The Gallup StrengthsFinder cost page lists every tier side by side.

Which to Choose

Your StrengthsFinder Results Outlast the Course

Some programs come back to strengths in a later term, and some employers run their own CliftonStrengths workshops years later. Your themes remain in whichever account you redeemed into, which is one more reason to use an email you will keep. If you lose track of them, you do not need to retake the test to see them again. Signing back in is enough.

After your Top 5, the next question may be a job

Five themes will get you through the assignment. For some readers, especially those taking this through work, the Top 5 raises a bigger question about what to do next. Answering it takes a second test, about how you work and which jobs match that.

Five Themes Answer the Assignment. A Job Asks More

When the question stops being homework and becomes a job, Pigment looks at the pace, company and pressure you work best with, alongside your strengths, and suggests roles to consider. It costs $79.99.

See which work fits the way you work

Manifesto

Your Top 5 names how you like to operate. Pigment starts at the next question: what work to do with it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I redeem my CliftonStrengths access code?

Go to the redeem page on my.gallup.com, type the code exactly as printed, then sign in to a Gallup account or open a new one. Use a personal email, not a school address, because your results live in that account. The questions start right away and take about 30 minutes. Redeem the week the book arrives, while a bad code can still go back to the seller. If Gallup rejects the code, check for look-alike characters such as a zero and the letter O before you assume it was used.

Does the StrengthsFinder 2.0 ebook include an access code?

No. A Kindle or other ebook edition carries the text of StrengthsFinder 2.0 and no sealed card, so there is nothing to redeem. The same goes for audiobooks and library ebooks. If your course needs your Top 5 results and you prefer reading on a screen, the usual answer is the ebook for the chapters plus a Gallup Top 5 code for the test. Check the listing wording before you pay; any digital listing that promises a code is worth a question to the seller first.

What happens if my StrengthsFinder access code has already been redeemed?

The results belong to whoever redeemed it first, and the code will not open the test again. That is the usual story with a used copy, since sellers grade the binding and pages, not the card, and it is the same if a roommate took the test with your book. If you bought the book new, send Gallup's help center a copy of your receipt; it may replace the code once it checks the purchase. If the book was used or borrowed, buy a Top 5 code from Gallup for $24.99 and keep the book for the chapters.

Should I buy Top 5 or All 34 CliftonStrengths?

For a class or workshop, Top 5 is almost always enough, because it is what the book gives every student. At our September 26, 2026 check, Gallup charged $24.99 for Top 5 and $59.99 for all 34. You can start with Top 5 and upgrade later for $49.99, which fills in the other 29 themes from your original answers, so there is no need to decide now.

How long does the CliftonStrengths assessment take?

Gallup puts it at about 30 minutes. Every question shows two statements and asks which one sounds more like you. Set aside a little more than that, sit somewhere quiet, and finish in one go, so your answers at the end come from the same frame of mind as the ones at the start.
