The BCG Consulting Career Assessment CCA Is Mostly About How You Work

The BCG consulting career assessment CCA is the online test BCG sends within hours of your application. It takes about 30 minutes, and only eight of its questions are math. The rest ask how you work, and they are built to catch answers that do not hold together. That changes how you should spend the time before you sit it.

The Basics

Where the BCG Consulting Career Assessment (CCA) Sits in Hiring

What is the BCG CCA test?

The BCG CCA, short for Consulting Career Assessment, is an online screening test Boston Consulting Group sends soon after you apply. It runs on SHL's testing platform, takes about 30 to 35 minutes, and must be finished within 48 hours. Candidates report two work-style ranking sections and one timed numerical section of eight questions.

The CCA is an early screen. It sits between your application and your first live conversation with anyone at the firm. On its US associate recruiting page, BCG says the invitation arrives 30 to 90 minutes after you apply, the test takes about 30 to 35 minutes, and you have 48 hours to complete it. Some prep sites still quote 24 hours; go by BCG's current page and the deadline in your own invitation email. A strong resume does not skip it.

The usual order for US candidates runs like this:

  1. Application and resume.
  2. The CCA, if your office uses it.
  3. For selected candidates, an online case about two weeks after the application deadline.
  4. First-round interviews, which mix case questions with questions about you.
  5. Final round.

BCG's own description of the CCA, and what candidates add

BCG says little about the test, and what it says is general. The firm describes the CCA as a way to learn about you "above and beyond what's on your resume and application," giving a structured, unbiased view of your potential to succeed at BCG. It does not publish the sections, the item counts or the scoring.

Everything more specific comes from people who have taken it. Prep sites and candidate forums agree on three parts: a long work-style section, a short timed numerical section, and a second, shorter work-style section. Treat those details as well-sourced hearsay rather than BCG policy. This page marks which is which as it goes.

Does everyone get the BCG CCA?

Not every BCG applicant gets a CCA. BCG's page for advanced degree candidates says it applies to US and Canadian applicants for full-time consultant roles. Prep sites date the rollout to 2024 and report other offices adding it over time, while some offices still use an online case or a different test instead. If your recruiter has not mentioned it, watch your inbox rather than assume either way.

Is the BCG CCA an SHL test?

Yes, SHL delivers it. The same BCG page says the invitation comes from an address at shl.com, SHL's testing platform, within one to two hours of applying. That matters for two reasons. Check your spam folder, since a missed email still uses up your 48 hours. And SHL's style of ranking and numerical items is well documented, so general SHL practice is a fair warm-up, even though the CCA mix is BCG's own.

BCG CCA vs Casey, Pymetrics and the Potential Test

BCG has used several online screens over the years, and they are easy to mix up. Here is how they compare. Anything not on a BCG page is marked as reported.

Is BCG CCA the same as Casey?

No. They are separate steps. The CCA comes first, within hours of applying, and looks at work style and quick math. Casey is BCG's chatbot-led online case. Per BCG, selected candidates get it about two weeks after the application deadline, and it runs around 35 minutes. You pick the useful data, work through case math and explain a recommendation, so it sits much closer to a live case interview.

Methodology

The 3 Sections Inside the BCG Consulting Career Assessment CCA

People who have sat the CCA report three sections in a fixed order. BCG has not published this layout, so read the counts below as reported, not official.

Section

What you do

Items

Timed?

1. Work style, part one

Put groups of statements in order of how well each fits your habits

76

No

2. Numerical reasoning

Solve short business math and logic problems

8

Yes, 12 minutes for the section

3. Work style, part two

Rank statements about how other people see you

15

No

The work-style prompts make up 91 of the roughly 99 items. That ratio is the most useful fact about the test. Most prep material spends its time on the eight math questions, yet most of what you hand BCG is your own account of your habits on a team.

BCG does not name what the rankings measure. Prep sites report about seven work-style themes: communication, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, empathy, time management and decision-making. Treat that list as reported, not official. It is still a useful guide to the kinds of statements you will be asked to rank.

How long do you have to complete the BCG CCA?

BCG gives you 48 hours from the invitation to finish. The test itself runs about 30 to 35 minutes, and by candidate reports only the numerical section has its own timer. Plan to do it in one sitting. BCG suggests taking it between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern, when its technical support is available, which is the sensible choice if your connection has ever dropped mid-call.

What happens if you run out of time on the BCG CCA?

The numerical section gives you 12 minutes for 8 questions, about 90 seconds each. Candidates report a single clock for the whole section rather than a timer per question, so a slow start takes time from the questions at the end. When the time is up, the section closes and anything unanswered stays blank. BCG has published nothing about a penalty for wrong answers, so a quick, reasoned guess beats an empty answer.

Can you use a calculator on the BCG CCA?

Yes. Candidates report that you can use a calculator. It helps with the arithmetic, but the slow part of most items is deciding which numbers matter and what the question is asking. Use the calculator for the multiplication and keep the thinking on paper.

BCG CCA Numerical Reasoning: 4 Worked Question Types

Candidates name four kinds of numerical item. The examples below were written for this page to show each pattern. They are practice items, not CCA questions.

Time reallocation. Four analysts each spend 10 hours a week cleaning data. A new tool cuts that time by 30 percent, and the saved hours go to client interviews that take 1.5 hours each. How many extra interviews can the team run each week? The saving is 4 × 10 × 0.3 = 12 hours, and 12 ÷ 1.5 = 8 interviews. The trap is applying the 30 percent to one analyst and stopping there.

Scheduling logic. A workshop day starts at 9:00. Session A runs two hours and must come first. Session B runs three hours and must end before Session C starts, and C must start by 14:30. When can B start? A ends at 11:00 at the earliest, and B must finish by 14:30, so it starts no later than 11:30. Any start from 11:00 to 11:30 works. Sketch the limits as a timeline before you look at the options.

Quantitative reasoning. A client's revenue grew 20 percent in year one and fell 10 percent in year two, ending at $1.08 million. What did it start at? Growth followed by decline multiplies: 1.2 × 0.9 = 1.08, so the starting revenue was $1.0 million. Adding the percentages instead (plus 20, minus 10, net plus 10) gives about $982,000, which is wrong.

Visual patterns. A slide template shows a row of five boxes, one per client region. Each frame, the shaded box moves two places to the right, wrapping back to the start, and a progress bar under the row fills by one third, emptying the frame after it is full. In frame one, box 1 is shaded and the bar is empty. What does frame seven show? The shade has moved six times, 12 places. In a row of five that is two full laps plus two more, so box 3 is shaded. The bar runs empty, one third, two thirds, full, then repeats every four frames, so frame seven matches frame three: two thirds full. Find each part's cycle on its own, then combine them.

What You Get

How BCG Scores the Consulting Career Assessment CCA

BCG does not publish how it scores the CCA. Prep sites report, and BCG's own line about your potential to succeed at the firm fits, that your answers are compared with a profile built from people already doing well at BCG.

Testing people call this norm-referenced scoring. There is no fixed pass mark. You are placed against a reference group, the way a runner's time only means something once you know how the rest of the field ran. If you want the background on how tests like this are built and checked, the American Psychological Association has a section on testing and assessment.

Three things follow. No target score exists, so picking the most impressive statement every time does not help, because the people in the reference group do not answer that way either. Your overall pattern counts for more than any single answer. And consistency matters, because the work-style sections come back to the same themes in different words, and a profile that contradicts itself is easy to spot.

Forced-Choice Work-Style Questions: Why You Can't Game the CCA

The work-style sections ask you to put statements in order, from the one that best fits your habits down to the one that fits worst. Every statement in a set sounds like something a good consultant might say. Ranking one higher pushes another lower, so you cannot mark yourself strong on everything at once. That is what forced choice means, and it is why employers use the format.

A 2019 review of forced-choice personality tests used for hiring, by Cao and Drasgow at the University of Illinois, found little score inflation overall, an effect size of 0.06. It also found that the traits most relevant to the target job inflated the most. In plain terms, people tilt hardest on the traits they think the employer wants. On the CCA, that tilt has to hold up across dozens of later rankings on the same themes, which is hard to do on purpose.

A worked example. This set was written for this page and is not a CCA item. Rank these four from most like you to least like you:

  1. I keep going on a problem until it is solved.
  2. I check in with teammates before I change a plan.
  3. I like to take the lead in a group.
  4. I finish my work well before the deadline.

An honest ranking for someone who is dogged but not a natural leader might be A, D, B, C. A tilted ranking puts C first because leadership sounds like what BCG wants. The trouble comes later. A set of new statements asks about the same themes in other words, such as "I prefer to support the person running the meeting" against "I push the group toward a decision." The candidate who really is not a leader ranks the support statement higher, and now two answers disagree. Across dozens of sets, those clashes form a visible pattern. The honest ranking has none to hide.

What is the BCG CCA pass rate?

BCG has never published a CCA pass rate. Figures you see online come from prep companies or small forum polls, and none says how it was counted. What is known is the shape of the process: many applicants take the CCA, and fewer are invited to the online case and first-round interviews. Plan as if the screen is selective, because it was designed to be.

Is the BCG CCA hard?

It is hard in two different ways. The math is school level: percentages, ratios, simple scheduling. Eight problems in 12 minutes leaves about 90 seconds each, including reading the setup, and candidates most often report leaving the last one or two unfinished.

The work-style part is hard in another way. Around 90 rankings, some of them close to earlier ones, test your patience more than your judgment. Fatigue is where inconsistency creeps in, so give the last set the same care as the first.

The Difference

Why the CCA Is Also a Fit Test for You

BCG uses the CCA to check whether you fit the firm. Four reasons to run the same check from your side.

The benchmark is people who stayed

The CCA benchmark reportedly comes from consultants already doing well at BCG. If your honest rankings look nothing like theirs, that gap says something about the daily job as well as about the screen. It is worth hearing before you accept an offer, not two years in.

Tilted answers follow you into the job

Suppose you tilted every ranking and it worked. You would land in a job built around the profile you described, and the job asks for that profile every day, long after the 30 minutes are over. Honest answers protect you as much as they protect BCG.

The parts of the job it never asks about

The CCA looks for potential to succeed at BCG. It does not ask which parts of consulting would drain you: constant email, calls and meetings, teamwork, and priorities you set yourself, all listed as everyday conditions for management analysts in the federal O*NET database.

BCG keeps the profile, and you never see it

BCG does not share your CCA profile with you. You learn only whether you move on. If you want to know what your own ranking pattern says about how you work, you have to get that from somewhere else, ideally before you commit years to the answer.

They sit at different moments. The CCA decides whether BCG keeps talking to you, and no career test can predict or raise your CCA result. Pigment is for your side of the decision: whether consulting work fits how you operate.

Who It's For

Who the BCG Consulting Career Assessment Is For

Four kinds of applicant get the invitation, and each has a different first move.

Undergraduates applying for Associate roles

You are the group the CCA was built around. Do your numerical practice early in the application season, before you apply, since the invitation can land within the hour.

MBA and advanced degree candidates

BCG confirms the CCA for full-time consultant applications in the US and Canada. If you took it within the past year, for an internship or an earlier cycle, that result stands and you can set the new invitation aside. If the MBA is itself a change of direction, our guide to an MBA career change covers the wider decision.

Experienced hires moving into consulting

You may be years away from timed math. Rebuild speed with percentage and ratio drills. Then think about the work-style section, since your honest pattern reflects how you work now, after years in another field. Our guide to moving into consulting mid-career covers the rest of the switch.

People still deciding whether consulting is right

If you are applying partly to find out, use the work-style questions as a mirror. Each time a ranking feels forced, notice which statement you wanted to put last. That is a clue about the job as much as about the test.

Which to Choose

Using the 48-Hour Window Before the BCG Consulting Career Assessment CCA

Most people land here after the invitation email arrives. Below is a plan for those 48 hours, then a longer one if you are reading ahead.

Practice the pace, then rank the statements as you are

  1. First hour: find the email and book the time. Check spam for the message from SHL. Pick a 45-minute slot inside BCG's support hours, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern, on a computer with a steady connection.
  2. Next few hours: timed numerical sets. Use free SHL-style numerical practice in blocks of eight questions with a 12-minute timer. After each block, look only at your misses and name the cause: misreading, arithmetic, or the wrong setup.
  3. Adopt a 90-second rule. If a question is not moving after about 90 seconds, take your best guess, then move to the next. One stubborn problem can cost you two easy ones.
  4. Skip rehearsing a persona. Read a few sample ranking items so the format is familiar, then stop. Decide in advance to rank by what you do in a normal working week, not by what you think BCG prefers.
  5. Sit it in one go. Quiet room, phone in another room, a notepad and a calculator within reach.

A four-week version for early planners

With a month, spend the first two weeks on percentages, growth rates and ratios until they feel automatic, and the last two on mixed timed sets and scheduling puzzles. Add a few mock cases near the end, because Casey and first-round interviews follow closely for those who move on. For more on timed screens in general, see our guides to aptitude tests in job interviews and how psychometric and aptitude tests differ.

Can you retake the BCG CCA?

Candidates report no second attempt within an application cycle. BCG's own rule is that a CCA completed within the past year still counts, so you can ignore a new invitation in that period. After a year, you take it again. Your first sitting therefore counts for every BCG application you send in the next twelve months.

Common BCG CCA mistakes

  • Gaming the rankings. Putting the most impressive statement first every time builds a profile that contradicts itself.
  • Missing the SHL email. It often lands in spam, and the 48 hours run whether you have seen it or not.
  • Stalling on one numerical item. The 12-minute clock covers all eight questions, so one stuck problem costs you the easy ones after it.
  • Sitting it late in the window. Leaving it to the last evening means no time to recover from a dropped connection, and no BCG support outside 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern.

The question the CCA leaves with you

The CCA settles BCG's side of the decision. The other side is yours: whether years of client work suit you. O*NET's profile of management analysts, the occupation that includes consultants, lists email every day, frequent calls and face-to-face talks, and teamwork as normal conditions. Some people find that pace feeds them. Others find it grinds, however well they score.

Pigment asks forced-choice questions too, with one difference that matters here: the report comes to you. It covers your strengths, how you handle colleagues who think differently, and whether long client weeks tend to energize or drain you, and it ends by naming roles worth a look. Keep practicing the math, because Pigment has no view of how BCG will score you. Where it helps is the decision an offer would put in front of you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the BCG CCA test?

It is BCG's online screening test, the Consulting Career Assessment. The invitation arrives shortly after you apply, and you have 48 hours to finish a test that takes about 30 to 35 minutes. Candidates report two work-style sections where you rank statements, plus eight timed numerical questions. It comes before any case or interview.

Is the BCG CCA hard?

The math is not advanced: percentages, ratios and simple scheduling. The pressure is the clock, since candidates report eight questions in 12 minutes. The work-style part is hard in a different way, because around 90 rankings test your patience and your consistency. Most people find the time limit the hardest part.

Does everyone get the BCG CCA?

No. BCG says the CCA applies to US and Canadian applicants for full-time consultant roles. Prep sites report other offices adding it over time, while some still use an online case or a different test. If your recruiter has not mentioned it, watch your inbox, including spam, after you apply.

Can you retake the BCG CCA?

Not within a year. BCG says a CCA completed in the past twelve months still counts, so a new invitation in that period can be ignored, and candidates report no second attempt in the same cycle. After a year you take it again. Treat your first sitting as the one that counts for every BCG application that year.

What is the BCG CCA pass rate?

BCG has never published one. Figures online come from prep companies or small forum polls, and none explains how it was counted. Scoring is reportedly norm-referenced, meaning your answers are compared with a profile of people doing well at BCG, so there is no fixed pass mark to aim for.

Is the BCG CCA an SHL test?

Yes. BCG says the invitation comes from an shl.com address, SHL being the testing company that runs the platform. The ranking and numerical formats look like SHL's other tests, so general SHL practice is a fair warm-up. The mix of sections and the scoring profile are BCG's own.

Is BCG CCA the same as Casey?

No. The CCA comes first, within hours of applying, and looks at work style and quick math. Casey is BCG's chatbot-led online case, sent to selected candidates about two weeks after the application deadline. It runs about 35 minutes and is much closer to a real case interview.

What happens if you run out of time on the BCG CCA?

Candidates report that the numerical section closes when its 12 minutes run out, and anything unanswered stays blank. BCG has published nothing about a penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question. If one problem stalls you for about 90 seconds, make a reasoned guess and move on.

How do you pass the BCG CCA?

Practice timed sets of eight numerical questions in 12 minutes, and use a 90-second rule so one problem cannot sink the section. Find the SHL email early and sit the test in one quiet session during BCG's support hours. On the rankings, answer as you actually work in a normal week, and stay consistent.

Does the BCG CCA have a video interview?

No. Candidates consistently report no webcam, no recording and no video question anywhere in the CCA; it is ranking prompts and numerical questions on screen. Video comes later for some. Prep sites report that Casey, the online case that follows for selected candidates, ends with a short recorded summary of your recommendation, with about a minute to prepare and a minute to speak, and some offices run separate one-way video interviews.
