What it was built for

Team vocabulary. Birkman gives organizations a shared way to describe how people show up: their usual behavior in public, the needs underneath that behavior, how they act under stress, and what genuinely interests them. Consultants use the four-color grid, often called Birkman Colors, to walk a group through how its members differ and where friction is likely to show up.

A real, respected instrument

Birkman is a genuine behavioral profile, not a novelty test. Most people encounter Birkman inside a workplace, assigned by an employer or a coach rather than sought out on their own. The individual report exists, but the instrument's design, its pricing tiers, and its consultant network are all built around the organizational use case first.

The individual report exists, but it is the smaller side product of a tool built for group use.

A position on a fixed four-color grid

The core output is a position on a four-color grid, plus wherever your specific mix lands between the colors. That grid is useful shorthand for a team discussion. It is less useful as a personal roadmap, because it was built to be legible to a manager or facilitator first, and to the person second.

The deeper read needs a consultant

The Basic self-serve report gives you a summary. The fuller Signature interpretation, the one that actually explains the gap between your usual behavior and your underlying needs, requires booking a session with a certified Birkman consultant. Understanding your own results in depth is not something the tool hands you directly.

Not built to end in a career move

Birkman tells you where you sit on its grid and how that compares to your team. It does not tell you what to do next in your career. That is not a flaw in the instrument, it is simply outside the job it was built to do. If the question in front of you is what your next move should be, a company-facing behavioral profile is answering a different question than the one you are asking.

Choose Birkman when

Your company or team is rolling out a shared vocabulary for how people work together, and you have access to a certified consultant who can walk the group through it. Birkman is strongest as an organizational tool: onboarding cohorts, leadership offsites, team dynamics conversations. If that is the job in front of you, Birkman is a real, well-established option.

Choose Pigment when

You are one person facing your own career decision: whether to stay, whether to move, what kind of work would actually be worth doing next. Pigment was built to answer that question directly, on your own, without a consultant session or a team debrief standing between you and your results.

Consider using both
