How to map which hours energize you and which drain you

30 min· Career Discovery

This is for you if Sunday nights fill with dread. The alarm feels like a sentence, and a weekend off no longer refills the tank. Underneath is the thought that keeps you up at night: one life, and most of it spent dreading the work.

The dread can feel like a verdict on your whole life. Most of the time, it isn't. Look closely and it has a shape, and your week shows you which shape and which move.

One honest note. This guide is for the dread that eases when your week changes shape. If the heaviness is bigger than that, take it to a doctor or therapist, especially if it follows you home, flattens what you used to enjoy, or throws off your sleep. This is career development, not a diagnosis or a substitute for professional or medical support.

Open two parts of your Career Discovery report.

The Five Types of Work, near the back, names your primary type and your complement: the work that gives you energy instead of taking it.

How Your Mind Works, near the front, describes how you naturally do nine everyday things: take in information, focus, decide. Read it as your grain, the way of working that costs you least.

Now read your week against both. A block drains when it makes you work against your grain: back-to-back meetings if you think best in quiet, a run of admin if it is not your primary type or complement.

  1. Write your primary type and your complement where you can see them.
  1. Pull up last week, including what never reaches the calendar: email, messages, the quick "got a sec?" Break it into recurring blocks.
  1. Mark each block feeds or drains. For every draining block, name which read it fights: the wrong kind of work (your Five Types), or the wrong way of working (How Your Mind Works).
  1. Stand back and look at the draining blocks together. That is the shape of the dread, and it tells you the move.
  • The drain sits in a few blocks: two heavy days, a standing meeting, a stretch of admin. Write the line: the drain is [these hours], and it fights [my primary type, or how I focus]. Circle the loudest block and write the one small ask to give those hours back: "Before my next 1:1, I'll ask to batch the check-ins into one afternoon."
  • The drain runs through most of the week: nearly every block fights your grain. Write the line: the drain is most of the week, and it fights [my primary type, or how I focus]. Even this big, start where you can act: circle the worst block and write one small ask to claw back those hours. Whether to reshape the role or leave is a bigger call for elsewhere. Here, the win is a shape and one block you can move now.

Put the line where you will see it, and read it this Sunday night before bed.

Either way, you have named the exact hours that fight how you are built and made a small move on them. The dread has stopped being a verdict on you, and seeing its shape is most of the relief.
