How to find the part of you that isn't the job
This is for you if the role has been carrying more of who you are than you'd like. When you picture it gone, there's a blank where "you" should be. You're not sure what would be left.
That blank is the scary part. It feels like proof there is nothing under the role. But there is something under there, and it was there before this job. The role has just been standing in front of it.
One honest note before you start. This guide is for the feeling that the title has quietly become most of who you are.
If the blank feels bigger than the work, that deserves more than a read of your report. If it follows you home, flattens what you used to enjoy, or throws off your sleep, talk to a doctor or a therapist. This is career development, not a diagnosis and not a substitute for professional or medical support.
Your report already holds the part of you that isn't the job. Open Discovering Your Strengths, near the front of your Career Discovery report.
It lists your top strengths in order. Each is a plain description of a way you naturally are. Some are marked rare, the traits few people share.
Those rare traits carry a ✦ in your report. If you've taken the Superpower profile, it goes deeper on exactly these: it ranks every strength by how rare it is, shows the exact percentile you land in, and names the rare combinations only you have.
The page asks you to choose three that ring true.
Read these as ways you are, not skills you picked up for a job. A strength like that showed up long before this title. It was there in how you played as a kid, and how you think when no one is paying you. It is yours, not the role's.
Now do this.
- Choose the three strengths that ring truest. Trust the flicker of recognition over the ones that sound impressive.
- For each, find one memory from before this job where it showed. Not a work story. A moment from school, a friendship, or a thing you did for fun.
- Write one line about yourself using those three, with no title in it. Something like: "I am someone who notices what others miss, holds a room steady, and keeps going when it gets hard."
Read that line back. None of it was granted by a job, and none of it leaves when a job does. That is the part of you that isn't the role, in your own words, and you can keep it.
