How to stay steady through rejection in a job search
This is for you if you're hundreds of applications deep, and rejections come back instant or never. Somewhere the silence stopped feeling like the market and started feeling like a verdict on you.
After hundreds of small nos, they can start to feel like one big answer about you. Before you believe that feeling, check one thing: could the thing that rejected you ever see you at all?
Look at what screened that last application. A scanner matched keywords to a slot. A stranger gave it thirty seconds. None of it had a field for the thing you're good at.
That thing is in your results. Open Discovering Your Strengths, near the front of your Career Discovery report. It ranks your top ten, and a ✦ marks the rare ones, the traits eight in ten people don't carry. Hold your strongest, ✦ or not, against that last rejection and ask what the screen could see.
If you've taken the Superpower profile, it goes deeper: it ranks every strength by rarity and names the rare combinations only you have. That rareness is what a keyword scan has no field for.
Now do this.
- Pull up the last rejection that stung.
- Set it next to your top three strengths, the ones that read most like you. Write down one ✦ rare trait by name. If none is marked, write down your strongest trait instead.
- Look at what it scanned: a keyword, a title, a filter. Was your trait anywhere in there?
- Write one line and keep it where you'll see it before you apply again. Fill in the trait you wrote down: "That no was a keyword miss. It never reached [your strongest trait, ✦ or not, the one thing you are best at]. It can't be a verdict on what it never saw."
The relief here is mechanical: a screen that never had your shape in front of it could not judge it. So you keep going, and stop spending confidence on nos that were never about you.
