A reliable person has gone flat and you can't see why
This is for you if the person you never worried about, the one who quietly got things done, has gone flat. No blowup, no bad review, nothing you can point to. They still deliver, but there is less of them in it than there used to be, and you can't see why.
The easy story is that they have checked out, or they are coasting, or they need a push. Before you write any of those down, one read tells you whether it is something else entirely.
Open their results and go to Understanding Styles, the deep dive on how they work. A dependable, gets-it-done person often reads as a Pragmatist, but that is a guess until you check. See which of the four styles the report actually names for them.
If it comes back a different style, the flatness is still real. A different fuel is missing, though, and this exact move is not the one. Read the guide for the style it names: the fast Accelerator, the deliberate Analyst, or the steady Harmonizer.
A Pragmatist runs on concrete outcomes they own from start to finish. Hand them a real thing to ship, with a finish line they can see, and they come alive. Give them open-ended process that never lands, or take the ownership back by hovering, and they go quiet.
They rarely say so. A Pragmatist starved of something concrete to finish goes flat long before they would raise it. By the time you notice, they have been running low for a while.
To give that fuel back, first see where it went. Look at what you have handed this person over the last month or two. Find where the finish lines went missing: the open-ended project with no end, the committee seat, the calls you keep sitting in on.
Now hand one back. Over the next few days, take these three moves:
- Pick one real piece of work and give them the whole of it, theirs to own end to end.
- Name the finish line out loud, so done is something they can see and reach.
- Take one open-ended or committee item off their plate to make room.
Write those three moves down now, plus the sentence you will open your next one-on-one with. Something like: I want to hand you this whole thing, start to finish, and I will keep done crisp. You walk in holding a specific thing to give, not a worry to raise.
