Redesign your week around the work that energizes you

30 min· Career Discovery

This is for you if quitting is off the table but your week is the wrong shape. The job is fine. You would stay if a few hours looked different, or you want your next review to show your best work. You cannot name which hours yet.

When a week feels off, people grit their teeth or browse job listings. Both skip the middle option: keep the job, change its shape.

A role is mostly tasks, and tasks can be traded. A draining week is tilted: too many hours on what wears you down, too few on what feeds you. Shift the tilt, keep the title.

Begin with your result. Near the back of your Career Discovery report, open The Five Types of Work and read your primary type and its complement. Those two feed you, not drain you. Write them down, with the feeling each gives you.

Now read your week honestly.

  1. List last week as real chunks: the calendar, plus the emails, messages, and favors that never reach it.
  1. Beside each, mark it primary, complement, or neither, by whatever ran longest.
  1. Circle the chunk closest to your primary type, the one you wish filled more of the week.
  1. Cross out the one "neither" chunk that leaves you flat every time.

Now make one trade, not ten. Write one ask that grows the circled chunk and sheds the crossed-out one, small enough to say in your next check-in.

> "I would like to take on more of [the circled work]. Could we move [the crossed-out work] to > someone it suits better?"

That one sentence is what you walk out with.

One caution: if you have not truly decided to stay, do that first. Leaving or reshaping is its own question, with its own guide.

A reshape is worth more than relief. Steering toward your primary type gets you known for your best work, the ground most raises are won on.
