How to read a job posting for real fit, not the title or the salary

15 min· Career Discovery

This is for you if a job posting is open in another tab and it looks close to right. Good title, fair pay, the kind of role you could see yourself in. The catch is that "close" is how the last mismatch started, and you would rather not find that out again in month three.

The title and the pay are what a posting is written to sell. Neither is what made your last role fit or not. That was decided by the shape of the actual day: the tasks you did most, and whether they ran with your grain. So read the posting for its work, and score that against your own.

Have two parts of your Career Discovery report open. The Five Types of Work, near the back, names your primary type and your natural complement. Together they are the work that gives you energy instead of taking it. The five types are Analytical, Creative, Integrative, Influential, and Operational.

Discovering Your Strengths lists your ranked top ten, and a ✦ marks the rare ones. Those two sections are your rulers.

The ✦ marks tell you which strengths are rare, not how rare. If you've taken the Superpower profile, it goes deeper on exactly these: it ranks every strength by how rare it is, shows the exact percentile you land in, and names the rare combinations only you have.

Now score the posting.

  1. Skip the title and the pay. Scroll to the "What you'll do" or "Responsibilities" section. That list is the real job.
  2. Take each responsibility line and mark which of the five types it mostly asks for. One line, one type. If a line is mixed, tag the bigger half.
  3. Tally. How much of the role sits in your primary or complement, and how much sits outside them? That ratio is the fit read the title was hiding.
  4. Read the two or three lines that are clearly the core of the job, the ones listed first or repeated. Do they lean on your top strengths, especially a ✦ rare one? A role built around a strength you already have is a different job from one that only tolerates it.

Then take the first that fits.

  • Mostly your types, core built on your strengths. Strong fit. Apply, and in the first call ask what a normal week in the role really looks like, to check the day matches the posting.
  • Split down the middle. This is the reshape question, and you can ask it before you commit. Name the most draining line and ask the recruiter whether it is fixed or negotiable. Better to hear the answer now than in month three.
  • Mostly outside your types, or the core leans on a strength you do not have. This is "close" by title and a mismatch by work, the exact trap that caught you last time. Pass, or apply with your eyes open.

You leave holding a one-line fit verdict on this posting and the single question it tells you to ask before you say yes.
