How to find your next chapter as AI reshapes your field
This is for you if the work you trained for is thinning under you. Maybe a tool now does the routine parts in seconds, or the market shrinks and rates keep dropping. You already know you need to move. What you can't tell is where the ground is still solid under you.
The reflex is to sprint toward whatever field looks safe. But safe keeps changing, and in the rush you drop the one thing that carries over: the part of your work hardest to hand off.
That part is a judgment only you make, a synthesis you pull together, or a connection you broker. It stays scarce whether a tool closes in or the market thins. Find yours first, then aim it.
Your results name the raw material. Open Discovering Your Strengths in your Career Discovery report and read your top ten. A ✦ marks the rare ones, the traits most people don't have.
Now do this:
- Go down your top ten, the ✦ rare ones first.
- For each, bring back the proudest moment it earned you.
- Ask which edge it turned on: a judgment you made, a synthesis you pulled, or a connection you brokered. If it reads as just fast, look one layer under for the call, the tie, or the person.
- Write your edge as one short phrase. Not a list. One thing you could say out loud, like judging how a line lands.
That phrase is your edge.
Now aim it. Open your Aligned Work Areas, the nine job-area cards, and read the example work on each. Keep the cards whose work leans on your edge phrase. Set the rest aside.
Take the first kept card where your edge does the real work. That is your direction.
Read that card's common titles and common teams. Write your one search: your edge phrase plus one of those titles or teams.
This week, send that search to one person who already does that work, or apply to one posting that matches. One probe, not a plan for later.
You finish holding one edge, one direction, and one search already out the door. That is steering on purpose, not away in a panic.
