How to lead with your Superpower when you're going for the bigger role
A bigger role sits in front of you, and you can feel yourself reaching to prove all of it: the hours, the range, everything. What you don't have yet is the one thing that makes you the obvious call.
The bigger role doesn't go to whoever wants it most. It goes to the person who clearly fits what the seat asks for, and is honest about the part they don't cover yet.
Your Superpowers are the rare combination few people bring. Your Systems are how you work over the long haul, not just on a good day. Both set you apart, but each one only counts against a real demand.
Now do this.
- List what the role demands. Not the title, not the posting's bullets. The four or five things this seat has to be good at. ("Hold a plan steady across the year." "Win a skeptical exec team.")
- Lay your profile beside the list. Open your Superpowers and your Systems. Mark each demand one of three. Differentiator: a Superpower or System makes you rare-good at it. Solid: you can do it, and so can plenty of others. Gap: this just isn't how you're built.
- Find your case. Circle the one or two you marked differentiator. Write each as one plain line, tied to the demand: "This seat lives or dies on holding the plan steady. That's exactly what my Superpower does."
- Name the one gap. Take the gap that matters most and raise it first, to yourself. Then decide how you cover it: a partner who has it, a System that carries part of it, a plan for the first quarter. Naming it yourself is what makes your strong claims believable.
You walk in holding your case: the one or two differentiator demands, plus the one gap with a plan on it. Not a highlight reel, but the reason you fit the seat and proof you see it clearly.
