Helping a first-gen student find their way
This is for a first-gen student building a path with no map to inherit, and no one at home to ask. Asking would only stir guilt over opportunities their family never had.
Name the gap, kindly and early. A student first down this path is not behind. Their peers just inherited know-how: which fields lead where, how to find an internship, the unwritten rules. That know-how is a map, and a map can be drawn. When no one says that out loud, the student quietly takes the gap to mean something is wrong with them.
Put the report on the table between you. Two sections do the work.
- Find what transfers. Open Discovering Your Strengths and pick two the student recognizes. For each, name one moment it was already true. These strengths don't ride on connections or unwritten rules, so they are fully theirs.
- Make it a real path. Open Aligned Work Areas and find one area that uses a strength they just claimed. Move from it to one real title. Then one small step this month: a class, a person to talk to, an internship to look up.
Leave room for the guilt. If wanting more feels like betraying the people who got them here, don't argue it away. Name it, let it sit, let the strengths stay theirs.
The student walks out with a route they can see and permission to want it. You held the spine that turned no map into a path.
Coaching questions
This isn't a script. Once the student names what's real, pull whatever fits.
What they already did without a map
- What have you figured out on your own that no one handed you?
- When you hit something you didn't know how to do, what did you do next?
- Who would you never think to ask about this, and what does that tell you?
Finding what travels with them
- Which of these strengths did you have long before college?
- Where has one of them already carried you through something hard?
- If the paths you grew up around aren't the ones you want, what is yours to build?
Making room for the pull toward home
- When you picture wanting more than this, what comes up?
- Who are you carrying with you into this choice, and what would they want for you?
- What is one thing you could try this month that costs almost nothing?
