How to find a thought partner who fills the gaps in how you think
This is for you if the room mostly agrees with you now, and you can feel your thinking running the same grooves.
The higher you rise, the fewer people can think against you. More advisors will not fix it.
In your Superpower profile, your Systems are the grooves your thinking runs in. Your Blindspots show where a groove can overshoot and crowd out the counter-move. The opposite of these is the person you want.
Keep every line of the spec about thinking, not their title, energy, or how much you like them. You are describing a mind that pushes against yours, not a friend.
1. Name your two defaults.
- From your Systems, take the groove you reach for first: "I default to ___."
- From your Blindspots, take what that default crowds out: "I rarely ___."
2. Flip each into a spec line.
- "Where I default to ___, they ___ instead."
- "Where I rarely ___, they go first."
3. Add the test that tells you the spec is met, not liked.
- "When I bring them a half-formed call, they ___ before they agree." Fill it with the move you most need but might not make on your own.
4. Test the spec against your orbit. Do not go hire. Read it against people already near you: a peer, someone two rungs down, someone outside work. For each, ask whether their mind runs this way, and cross off everyone who mostly agrees.
Name the one who is left. Then write the last line: the first half-formed problem you will bring them this month, to think against, not for.
You are holding a spec and a name. That is the whole of it.
