You're doing two jobs at once, and leading both

30 min· Career Discovery

This is for you if you're carrying the job you were promoted out of and the managing piled on top. You got more people and less support than almost anyone gets their first time. The list has no bottom, the weeks keep filling, and you've quietly decided the overload is your fault.

This is for the manager who already feels it. Change the story first, not the schedule. You are not failing. You are doing two jobs at once, and no week holds both. That is a load to reshape, not a flaw to fix, and no amount of trying harder was ever going to lift it.

Open The Five Types of Work, near the back of your report. It names your primary type and its complement, the work that gives you energy. Then open Uncovering Your Blind Spots, which names the strengths you overuse.

One honest note first. If the overload has gone past a hard stretch into something that follows you home and will not lift, take that seriously. That is a signal to get real support, not a lighter to-do list. This is career development, not a diagnosis and not a substitute for professional or medical support.

Now do this.

  1. Write out last week as it really was. Include what never reaches the calendar: the Slack, the reviews you redid, the task you grabbed because you were faster.
  2. Hold each item against your work types and ask: would this fit someone else's wiring better than yours? If yes, it is a hand off. If no, it is a protect: it sits in your primary or complement, or genuinely needs you and no one else.
  3. Now move one thing this week. From your hand-off pile, give one item away for good to someone genuinely suited: a real handoff, not a loan you take back on Friday. (Matching your whole team's work to who is built for it is its own move.)
  4. Open Uncovering Your Blind Spots and find the shadow of the strength you lean on hardest. Overused, it runs as an over-functioning habit. Name yours in a line, then ease off in one place this week.

You finish holding three things: a short protect list, one task handed off for good, and one over-functioning habit named and paused. That is a lighter week you built on purpose, not a promise to cope better next time.
