How to tell whether your role fits you, using your work types

30 min· Career Discovery

This is for you if you have the salary, the title that turns heads, and a flatness a weekend off no longer touches. Underneath, a quiet question: are you wrong for not feeling grateful?

Nothing is wrong with you. The smaller question: which work is your week starving you of, and which is it overfeeding you?

Open The Five Types of Work, near the back of your Career Discovery report. It names your primary type and your natural complement:

  • Analytical: data, logic, the right answer.
  • Creative: generating ideas, making something new.
  • Integrative: connecting people and pieces, seeing the whole.
  • Influential: persuading, rallying people to a direction.
  • Operational: running the system, keeping things on track.

Your primary and complement feed you.

  1. Write down your primary and complement.
  2. Pull up last week, plus what never hits the calendar: email, Slack, the "got a sec?"
  3. Mark each chunk energizing (mostly your primary or complement), draining (neither, and you feel it), or neutral. Mixed chunk? Score it by whatever ran longest.
  4. How much of the week was energizing, how much draining?

Read your week, and take the first that fits.

  • Is there draining work you could move, hand off, or shrink to free real hours for your best work? If yes, the role's shape is the problem, and fixable. Circle the most draining chunk and write one ask: "Before my next 1:1, I'll ask to hand off X."
  • If little moves and the week stays mostly draining, the work itself is wrong for how you're built. That's a real mismatch, and no amount of gratitude was ever going to close that gap. Take your starved primary type and name one place where it sits at the center. One small probe.
  • If little moves and the week is already mostly energizing, yet the flatness holds, then it isn't the kind of work that's weighing on you. Name the one thing outside the job that feels heaviest right now: the meaning, the people, or the workload. Write one small probe at it this week.

Whichever it is, the guilt was aimed wrong, and you can set it down.
