Coaching a client who feels stuck but can't name why

30 min· Career Discovery

This is for you when a client says they feel stuck and can't say why. They keep reaching for a practical fix, a new resume, a course, a hard conversation, and none of it moves them. You can tell the real block sits somewhere they can't quite point to, and so can they.

Stuck is a symptom, and it almost always gets treated at the wrong depth. Your client feels it at the surface, so they reach for a surface fix. When the fix doesn't move them, they conclude they are the problem. Your job is to find the one layer that's actually jammed, and work there instead.

A career can catch on five layers, from the surface down:

  • Practical. A logistical block: money, time, a skill they lack.
  • Energy. The work gives nothing back, so nothing feels worth it.
  • Identity. A story about who they are that the next step breaks.
  • Values. A gap between what they chase and what they actually want.
  • Fear. Something they won't say aloud that keeps the door shut.

Most stuck clients have spent months on the practical layer, so if practical fixes keep failing, look lower. Their results give you two fast probes.

Open The Five Types of Work in their Career Discovery report: their primary type and complement, the work that gives them energy. If their week has almost none of it, the jam is energy, and no practical fix was going to reach it.

Then open Uncovering Your Blind Spots, where each one is the shadow of a real strength. Read the one most alive right now. Often the pattern that holds them is a strength turned up too high, protecting an identity or a fear they won't yet name.

Here is the move that does the real work. A stuck client is too close to their own situation to see which layer is jammed, so step them out of it.

Ask: what would you tell a friend who was in exactly this spot? They will answer for the friend with a clarity they can't find for themselves. The layer they name for the friend is almost always their own.

One boundary before you go deep. This is career work. If what you hear underneath is heavier than the work, real grief, a low mood that won't lift, a crisis, pause the career piece.

Help them reach a therapist or the right professional first. This is career development, not a diagnosis and not a substitute for professional or medical support.

Close where the jam actually is. Name the layer in the client's own words, then find one small move made at that layer, not the surface fix they kept repeating. If it's energy, one hour this week on their starved work type. If it's fear, one sentence said out loud to one person.

You now have a way to find the real jam with any stuck client. They leave with the layer named, and one action that finally fits it.

Coaching questions

This isn't a worksheet to run in order. Once you sense which layer is jammed, pull whatever fits the room and follow it.

Finding the layer

  • When you picture doing the practical fix, does anything in you actually lift?
  • Which part of your week gives you the least back right now?
  • If nothing outside changed, what would still feel stuck?
  • What would have to be true about you for the next step to feel safe?

Stepping outside it

  • What would you tell a friend who was in exactly this spot?
  • If this were happening to someone you respect, what would you notice first?
  • A year from now, looking back, what will you wish you had named today?

Moving to one thing

  • Now that you can see the layer, what is one small thing you would do there this week?
  • Where would you first notice it starting to give?
