A Master's Degree in Career Counseling Runs 60 Credits and 700 Hours

Abstract Pigment hero for a master's degree in career counseling: a counted row of small violet squares above one much longer orange bar, standing for coursework against the supervised hours beneath it.
A master's degree in career counseling is 60 credits of clinical coursework followed by roughly 700 supervised hours in a working counseling setting. The coursework is the part every program page describes. The hours decide who finishes. This page puts a number on the whole thing, dates every figure, and settles the fork you should answer before you pay an application fee.

A Master's Degree in Career Counseling Runs 60 Credits and Ends in Supervised Hours

Start with a real program. Colorado State University's MA in Counseling and Career Development, career counseling specialization, requires 60 credits: a 48-credit core shared with the school and clinical tracks, plus 12 credits in the specialization. Inside those sit a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship. It closes with a written comprehensive exam and an oral presentation, and graduates are prepared to pursue counseling licensure in Colorado.

That shape answers most of what people search for. Sixty credits split 48 core and 12 specialization, with 700 supervised hours underneath them. Sixty at Colorado State, and higher elsewhere.

Two things get confused with it. A general counseling master's swaps the last 12 credits for a clinical or school focus. A career coaching certificate runs weeks, with no supervised hours. Three rungs, one search.

How to become a career counselor, in order

Six steps. The middle three hold the years.

  1. A bachelor's degree in any field. These programs admit from teaching, social work, psychology, business and HR.
  2. A CACREP-accredited counseling master's, either a dedicated career counseling program or a clinical or school program you add the career specialization to.
  3. About 60 credits of coursework, two to three years.
  4. The 100-hour practicum and the 600-hour internship, under a site supervisor.
  5. Your state's licensure exam and its post-degree supervised hours, then the licence application.
  6. The Certified Career Counselor credential, if you want the specialist marker on top.

Step five moves with your address. Exams, post-degree supervised hours and the protected title itself are set by each state counseling board, not by any national rule. The American Counseling Association's state-by-state licensure page has a dropdown for every state and says outright that you must consult your own board. Pick your state, open that board's site, and read its rules before you shortlist a program.

What degree do you need to be a career counselor?

The degree behind the title is a counseling master's with a career specialization. The strictest published answer is NCDA's: its Certified Career Counselor requirements ask for a master's or higher in Counselor Education, Counseling Psychology, School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or Rehabilitation Counseling. Notice what is absent: the word career. The field matters more than the specialization printed on it, which is why the practical route below works at all.

An MA in career counseling and an MS differ by college, not by curriculum

Colorado State awards an MA through its College of Health and Human Sciences. Penn State awards an MEd because the program sits in a school of education. Florida State awards a joint MS and EdS. The letters record which faculty houses the degree; the course list and the accreditor decide where it takes you. Read those, ignore the initials.

A career counseling master's is 60 credits of coursework, plus 100 practicum hours and 600 internship hours.

Only the Licensed Title Requires a Master's Degree in Career Counseling

Settle this fork before you spend $40,000. Want the counselor title in a state that regulates it, the ability to bill as a licensed professional, or NCDA's Certified Career Counselor credential? The degree is required. NCDA will not consider an application without a master's or higher and the eight named core courses. Content to be called a coach? No state licenses you and no program admits you, and you can start on Monday. The career counselor degree requirements question turns on which of those two you are after.

The part that catches people out: a credential and a licence answer to different authorities. NCDA states it on its own page: certifications, licensure, and permission to practice are unrelated concepts. The CCC does not let you call yourself a counselor anywhere your state board says otherwise.

What is the difference between a career counselor and a career coach?

A career counselor's title is regulated in most states; a career coach's title is not. Where a state licenses professional counselors, using the title without one is an enforcement matter. Coaching sits outside all of it: no board, no protected scope, no supervised hours. The same work from two legal positions, which is why pay, insurance and client mix diverge.

Do you need a license to be a career counselor?

To use the counselor title in a state that regulates it, yes. To do career work under the coach title, no. Your own state board draws that line, which is why two people doing near-identical work can sit on opposite sides of a licensing law. NCDA's credential does not move it either.

Every alternative to a master's degree in career counseling stops at the same wall

A career coaching certification takes weeks to months and teaches a usable method. NCDA's Facilitating Career Development course is a recognized specialization route. University career services hire advisers on adjacent experience. Each puts you in front of clients, and none reaches the licensed title or, on its own, the CCC, because that credential starts from a master's transcript. If the wall matters to you, the degree is the only door.

Where the 60 Credits Go in a Career Counseling Master's Program

Credit counts and prices vary far more than you would expect, and both stay invisible until you open the catalogs side by side. The same 60-credit career counseling degree costs about $17,950 at one accredited program and about $40,650 at another, in-state at both. Check the credit total and the posted per-credit rate before you check anything else.

Every dedicated career counseling master's CACREP currently accredits, pulled from the directory on 15 September 2026, plus the route most working career counselors took instead.

Status and dates from the CACREP directory, credits and hours from each catalog, rates from each bursar. Now read the last row against the six above it. CACREP currently accredits six dedicated career counseling master's programs, against 443 in clinical mental health counseling and 275 in school counseling. One of the six is not taking applicants. That ratio is the shape of this decision.

How long does it take to get a master's in career counseling?

Two to three years, and the internship sets the floor. Coursework compresses; supervised hours do not. Two years is the advertised timeline and three is the common outcome, so raise career counseling practicum and internship placement with the program before you accept an offer.

Can you fit 700 supervised hours around a job?

Sometimes. Five things decide it, and no program page puts them in writing. Ask all five before you accept an offer.

Who finds the site. You do, in most programs. North Carolina Central hands students a list of approved field sites and tells them to make the calls. Departments keep the relationships, rarely a slot with your name on it.

Whether it pays. Budget as though it does not. These are academic placements carrying course credit; a paid one is worth confirming in writing.

When the hours exist. Career centres, schools and workforce programs see clients in business hours, the same window your employer wants. Six hundred hours at 15 a week runs about 40 weeks, nearly all of it weekday daytime.

Whether the program places you. Ask plainly, then ask the sharper version: how many of the last cohort were still unplaced a month before the practicum term started.

How residencies stack. On-campus residency weekends land on top of the fieldwork, not instead of it. Count the travel days in the same budget.

The eight core courses every career counseling master's program builds around

NCDA names them, and only one is specific to this field: career counseling theory and practice. The other seven are what any accredited core already carries: ethics and standards, social and cultural diversity, lifespan development, counseling theory, group counseling, research and program evaluation, and assessment and testing. Read a prospective transcript against all eight. A program missing one makes the credential application harder than it needs to be.

A career counseling master's starts with classes, then moves into a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship, over two to three years.

Accreditation: Why CACREP-Accredited Career Counseling Programs Are Rare

Career counseling is a recognized specialty. The 2024 CACREP standards name eight entry-level specialized practice areas, and career counseling is one of them, alongside addiction, clinical mental health, clinical rehabilitation, college counseling and student affairs, marriage and family, rehabilitation, and school counseling. Career counseling is one of eight entry-level specialty areas named in the 2024 CACREP standards.

Recognition and availability are different questions. Filter the CACREP directory to currently accredited career counseling programs and six institutions come back. Filter the same directory to clinical mental health counseling and 443 come back.

Is career counseling a CACREP-accredited specialty?

It is, and the programs carrying it have thinned out. The directory lists seven institutions under career counseling as previously accredited, against the six that still hold it. More dedicated career counseling programs have left CACREP accreditation than currently hold it.

CSUN is the cautionary one. Its accreditation ended in December 2017, its catalog says in its own words that the MS in Counseling degree option in Career Counseling has been suspended as of Fall 2018, and that page still ranks near the top of this search in 2026. A reader can spend an afternoon building a shortlist around a program that stopped admitting students eight years ago. Penn State is the subtler version of the same trap: its career counseling emphasis is still listed as accredited in the directory, and the department's own page says it is not taking applicants and points them at its clinical program instead.

The practical route is the one most working career counselors took. Enroll in a CACREP-accredited clinical mental health or school counseling master's, then add the career specialization through NCDA. You land in the same place, with a broader licence and a far longer list of career counseling programs to choose between.

Check the CACREP directory for enrollment status before you pay a deposit

The directory filters by accreditation standing, including previously accredited programs, which is the check a catalog page will not run for you. Search the institution, confirm it is currently accredited, then email the department one question: is the career counseling specialization admitting for the next intake.

Multiply Your Per-Credit Rate by 60 to Price a Master's Degree in Career Counseling

Colorado State posts base graduate tuition for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 at $677.50 a credit hour for residents and $1,661.10 for non-residents, before general, technology, and facility fees. Against 60 credits that is about $40,650 in base tuition as a resident and about $99,700 as a non-resident. The same 60-credit degree costs about $40,650 or about $99,700 depending on residency alone. The quality is identical. Only the address changed.

The rule worth carrying into any program page: find the posted per-credit rate, multiply by the credit total, add fees, then add two to three years of reduced earnings. A directory quoting a range without naming a school or a year is guessing on your behalf.

How much does a master's in career counseling cost?

Master's in career counseling cost per credit runs $677.50 resident and $1,661.10 non-resident at Colorado State, and about $299 a credit at the cheapest accredited program in the table above. Online tuition changes it in one specific way. CSU Online states that Colorado residency status is not a factor in its online rates, which run from $448 to $1,228 a credit depending on the degree. Flat-rate online pricing removes the non-resident surcharge, the largest single swing in the calculation. Convenience is the advertised benefit. Pricing is the one on the loan statement.

Is a master's in counseling worth it?

A $40,000 tuition bill against a $64,330 median is a slow payback. Here is the arithmetic, run once, on one worked example.

Say you earn $48,000 and enroll at Colorado State as a resident. Tuition is about $40,650 across 60 credits, before fees. Three years at half your current hours costs about $24,000 a year you do not earn, so $72,000 more. The hole is about $112,650. On the other side, the Bureau of Labor Statistics measured a $64,330 median wage for school and career counselors and advisors in May 2025, with a master's listed as the typical entry-level education. That is $16,330 a year more than you make now. $112,650 divided by $16,330 is about seven years after graduation, or roughly ten from the day you enroll.

Fees, loan interest and raises sit outside that and push both ways. Change one input and the answer moves: the same degree at North Carolina Central's online rate cuts tuition to about $17,950 and pulls break-even in by more than a year. The return is there. The per-credit rate you sign decides how slowly it arrives. For the wider comparison, the ranked view of graduate degrees for a career change runs the same cost logic across other fields.

How to cut the cost of a career counseling master's degree

Four levers. The first two beat any scholarship you will find.

A graduate assistantship. Colorado State's standard practice is to cover in-state base tuition for graduate assistants, paid separately from the stipend, in fall and spring. The half-time minimum stipend for 2025-26 is $1,922 a month. Ask a department how many assistantships its counseling cohort gets before you ask about scholarships.

In-state residency. Colorado State charges residents $677.50 a credit and non-residents $1,661.10, so residency is worth roughly $59,000 across 60 credits. Colorado asks for 12 continuous months of domicile before the first day of classes, graduate students may start that clock, and presence solely for school does not count. That clause is why this works for someone moving for a job and not for someone moving for a degree.

Your employer. Section 127 of the tax code lets an employer pay up to $5,250 a year of tuition tax free, graduate courses included, and the courses need not be work-related. Over three years that is $15,750 against a $40,650 bill. Ask HR for the written policy, not a manager for an opinion.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness. It fits this field better than most, because the jobs sit where the eligible employers are. School districts, public colleges, workforce boards and 501(c)(3) nonprofits all qualify, and the balance is forgiven after 120 qualifying monthly payments made while you work full time for one. Ten years in a public school changes the arithmetic above.

Bar chart titled 'One degree, two prices': the same 60-credit career counseling master's costs about $40,650 at the resident rate of $677.50 a credit and about $99,700 at $1,661.10 a credit.
The same 60-credit master's at Colorado State costs about 2.45 times as much for a non-resident as for a resident.

A 2.8 GPA and a Purpose Statement Open a Master's in Career Counseling Program

Admissions detail lives scattered across catalog pages, so take it from a program that is currently admitting. Colorado State publishes the whole bar for its MA in Counseling and Career Development.

The bar: a bachelor's degree; a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.8, with applicants below it considered if they have passed six credits of graduate coursework at B or better; a purpose statement of no more than 1,250 words written against the one specialization you are applying to; a resume; two professional or academic recommendation letters; a judicial proceedings form; and transcripts, unofficial accepted. No GRE appears anywhere in Colorado State's published requirements.

The dates carry as much weight as the bar. Entry is summer or fall only. The deadline is 1 January for domestic applicants and 1 December for international ones. Selected applicants get a half-hour virtual interview in late February, decisions land in the first two weeks of March, and admitted candidates declare intent by 1 April. Apply late and you are read on a space-available basis, the polite phrasing of rarely.

CSUN is the second data point, and it shows how far the bar moves between schools. It asked for a 2.5 minimum across the last 60 semester units, two named prerequisite courses passed at B- or better within the past seven years, two recommendations, a personal statement, a resume and an admission interview. CSUN asked for the GRE only when the cumulative undergraduate GPA fell below 3.0. Between the two: the floor sits between 2.5 and 2.8, the GRE is conditional at worst, and the interview is what decides.

What GPA do you need for a master's in career counseling?

Treat 3.0 as comfortable, 2.8 as the published floor at a live program, 2.5 as conditional. Below the floor, both offer the same escape route in different words: recent graded coursework proving you can do graduate work now. Retaking one course beats losing an admissions cycle. Then spend the effort where it counts. The statement and the interview are how a committee judges whether you can sit with a distressed stranger for 50 minutes. A test score checks a box. Applicants routinely invest in the wrong one.

Online Master's in Career Counseling Programs Solve Tuition and Leave the 700 Hours Local

You can take a master's in career counseling online, and the accredited versions carry the same course list as their campus siblings. Lectures, readings, discussion, and assessment travel well. The clinical requirement does not travel at all.

An online program moves the classroom and leaves all 700 supervised hours in your own city. The variable for a working adult is not whether you can watch a seminar at 9pm. It is whether a placement site within driving distance will take you, staff a qualified supervisor, and hold the slot for two to three semesters.

Residency weekends and the practicum site are what an online program still asks of your calendar

Many online counseling programs keep short on-campus residencies for skills work, because technique is assessed in person. Budget the travel. Then call two placement sites near you and ask whether they take interns from that program. A yes is worth more than any brochure; two refusals make the case for a campus program with local partnerships.

Jobs You Can Get With a Master's Degree in Career Counseling Pay a $64,330 Median

The settings are where the hours and the money separate, and five hire consistently. University career services, where the caseload spikes in recruiting season. K-12 and community college, where career work is one slice of a counselor's job. Workforce development, where the client arrives after a layoff and outcomes are counted in placements. Employee assistance programs, where an employer pays and the work is short-form. Private practice, where you set the fee and carry the risk.

The occupation holds 389,500 jobs in 2025 and is projected to grow 3% between 2025 and 2035. Steady employment without much expansion. The incumbent pages here still quote a $53,370 median from 2014 and a growth window that closed last year.

How much do career counselors make?

Career counselor salary with a master's degree starts at the $64,330 median and moves with the setting. The median is a midpoint across every setting, so treat it as an anchor for a range. Institutional roles cluster near it with benefits attached. Private practice has the widest spread and depends on filling a calendar, a business skill the degree does not teach. For what clients pay at the other end, the market read on career counseling services sets out going session rates.

Your Career Counseling Master's Degree Buys Eligibility, Not Permission to Practice

Three things get treated as one, and NCDA untangles them on its own page: certifications, licensure, and permission to practice are unrelated concepts. Graduating does not make you licensed. Getting licensed does not make you certified. Being certified does not authorize you to practice anywhere your state says otherwise.

The Certified Career Counselor credential is the specialist marker in this field. The CCC asks for a qualifying master's, eight core courses, one of three specialization routes, and a $175 application fee. It then runs on a three-year cycle carrying 30 continuing education contact hours, plus annual maintenance fees.

Who is eligible for the CCC?

Anyone whose transcript carries the right degree plus the eight named courses, which is why the transcript decides and the resume does not. NCDA's requirements, effective 29 June 2026, run in two pathways: one for a master's from a CACREP, CORE or APA accredited program, one for the same degree from a program without that accreditation, both asking for the same eight core courses. Both then need a specialization route: 600 hours of supervised career counseling experience, 60 approved continuing education hours, or the Facilitating Career Development course.

Then comes a step the directory pages leave out. The CCC carries a written assessment: four case studies, 60 minutes each, scored blind by trained reviewers over about three weeks. Fail and you may retest within a month; fail the retest and you wait a year. A degree earned outside the United States is evaluated first by Josef Silny and Associates or Educational Credential Evaluators against those same eight areas.

That is the argument for choosing a program carefully. Two candidates can hold identical job titles and only one can apply, because the eight-course list is checked line by line. Cross-reference a catalog against it before you accept an offer. The gap is cheaper to close as an elective than as a course you pay for twice.

Career counseling license vs certification: a state board grants one, NCDA grants the other

A licence comes from a state board, governs a protected title, and lets you practice independently and bill for it. A certification comes from a professional body, signals specialist competence, and travels across state lines in a way a licence does not. Most people want both, in that order. The CPCC credential explainer covers the certification layer.

Diagram titled 'Three separate permissions': three non-overlapping rings labelled Degree, Licence and Certification, granted by a university, a state board and a professional body.
A degree, a licence and a certification are three separate permissions, each granted by a different body.

The 700 Supervised Hours Decide Who Finishes a Master's Degree in Career Counseling

Two to three years and a five-figure bill, spent on a career built around helping other people choose their work, deserves a harder test than enthusiasm. Most applicants run the wrong one: they ask whether career development interests them, and it almost always does. Interest is what gets an application submitted. What decides year two is the shape of the week, not the subject of the study.

The shape is specific. Back-to-back hours of sustained attention on someone else's uncertainty. Problems you cannot solve for the client, only with them. A schedule set by other people's availability. Notes after the session. Six hundred internship hours of it, on top of a job you are probably still doing. People withdraw because that wears them down, rarely because the reading stopped being interesting.

Run the same read on yourself that you would run on a client

A career counselor's first move with any client is to gather evidence about the person before discussing options. Point that instrument at yourself first. You are about to make a larger commitment than most clients you will see.

This is the one place a Pigment career test belongs on this page. It is a forced-choice instrument, and it puts evidence behind the three things that week asks of you: back-to-back hours of sustained attention, a schedule set by other people, and notes after the session is over. That is a separate reading from what you find interesting, and this decision turns on it. It costs $79.99, and you would have the answer weeks before an admissions committee gives you theirs.

If the answer comes back yes: apply to a CACREP-accredited program with confirmed enrollment, check its catalog against NCDA's eight courses, price it at the posted per-credit rate, and line up a practicum site before your first semester.

Career Counseling Master's Degree: Questions People Ask Before Applying

“What degree do you need to be a career counselor?”

A master's or higher in counselor education, counseling psychology, school counseling, clinical mental health counseling or rehabilitation counseling. Notice what NCDA does not ask for: the word career on the diploma. The specialization is added afterwards, which is how most working career counselors got here.

“How much does a master's in career counseling cost?”

Between about $17,950 and about $40,650 in base tuition across the six accredited programs, in-state, before fees. Colorado State posts $677.50 a credit for residents and $1,661.10 for non-residents against 60 credits. Multiply the posted rate by the credit total yourself; a directory quoting a range without naming a school or a year is guessing.

“How much do career counselors make?”

$64,330 was the median wage for school and career counselors and advisors in May 2025, with a master's listed as the typical entry-level education. Treat it as a midpoint, not a starting salary. Institutional roles cluster near it with benefits; private practice has the widest spread.

“Do you need a license to be a career counselor?”

To use the counselor title in a state that regulates it, yes. To work as a career coach, no state licenses you and none stops you. Exams, post-degree supervised hours and the scope behind the title differ by state, so the only answer that counts is your own board's.

“What is the difference between a career counselor and a career coach?”

A licence and a scope of practice. A counselor holds a state-granted protected title and can bill as a licensed professional; a coach answers to no board and can start on Monday. The work overlaps; the legal position, the insurance and the client mix do not. A coaching certificate earns no graduate credit toward the degree.

“How long does it take to get a master's in career counseling?”

Two to three years full time. Coursework compresses and supervised hours do not: a 600-hour internship at 15 hours a week runs about 40 weeks before holidays or site availability. Sacramento State publishes its sequence as a three-year program outright.

“Is career counseling a CACREP-accredited specialty?”

Yes, one of eight entry-level specialty areas named in the 2024 standards. Availability is the harder question: six institutions currently hold CACREP accreditation for a career counseling program and one of those is not admitting. Check the directory, then email the department, before you pay a deposit.

“Who is eligible for the CCC?”

Anyone with a qualifying master's, the eight named core courses on the transcript, and one of three specialization routes: 600 supervised career counseling hours, 60 approved continuing education hours, or NCDA's Facilitating Career Development course. There is also a four-case-study written assessment, a $175 fee, and a three-year cycle carrying 30 continuing education hours.
